The cancer can also develop in the glands that are found under the lining of the bronchi. Lung cancers take long years to develop and spread. The areas may change in precancerous way. The changes do not structure like mass or tumor. The worst thing is that they are also not visible in x-ray. But one detects this precancerous change in the analyzing cells that can be found in the lining of the airways which are damaged on account of smoking. The lung cells fight back to maintain the tissue health and repairs the injuries.
With excessive growth of cells, tumor gets formed. This is in the form of cellular mass. In the benign stages the tumor is confined in few layers. In case the cancer becomes malignant it invades the surrounding tissues and areas. The cancer can metastasize and can travel to other body parts like the brain, the bone, adrenal glands, liver, collar bone, chest etc.

If the growth is inwards then it can affect the passage of the airways and can obstruct the breathing. Lung abscesses can result with infections and collapse in the lungs.
