Managing Hypertension in Kids

In today’s fast changing trends, hypertension and related problems now no longer remain in the domain of the adults. In fact the problem related with hypertension today has become rampant among children too. Hence timely intervention becomes necessary so as to further reduce complications if any.

Causes of hypertension in kids:-
Hypertension can be due to numerous factors like, obesity, hormonal disorder, problems related to the heart, kidney problems, hereditary and genetic factors, excess in take of salt and certain medicines like the steroids.

It has been noted that in premature babies and child born with low birth weight also tend to suffer from hypertension. The main cause of hypertension in young children is due to obesity.

Symptoms of hypertension in kids:-
Among kids it has been found that those who suffer from hypertension complain with headache, blurred vision, convulsion, fatigue etc. they also complain with respiratory diseases and lethargy. It has been found out that high blood pressure can damage the eyes, heart and brain. Hence early diagnosis and treatment is important for the kids to lead a normal life.

Diagnosing hypertension in kids:-
The blood normal pressure of the child is known, depending on their age, weight and height. The doctors will take 3 or more readings of the blood pressure so as to get the accurate BP level.

Treating hypertension in kids:-
The main aim lies in bringing the blood pressure to normal in hypertension. Particularly in case if the child weighs on the higher side and is obese then any physical activity becomes important. Diet plays a vital role in this. Hence the kids should be encourages to take a well balanced diet with generous servings of fruits, vegetables and fiber.  Also see that the amount of salt that is added in food is reduced. Ensure that the kid spends approximately 30-45 minutes of physical activity either by playing outdoor games or exercising.

If hypertension in kids is diagnosed early then it can be treated and controlled successfully. The parent’s role and intervention plays an important role in this.
