One should take care of the eyes regularly by visiting to an eye specialist. Eye check ups are important part of a complete body health program. Nutrition plays a vital role in the maintenance and sustainability of clear vision. A good and appropriate nutrition can slow down the eye related problems and can alleviate most of the conditions related with the eye.

For the proper functioning of the eye, the circulatory system plays a significant role. It provides all the vital and essential nutrients that are needed for the eye like, proteins, minerals and vitamins.

Importance of Vitamin A-
Vitamin A is one of the major nutrients needed for night vision. The colored component rhodopsin is a major constituent of vitamin A. they are extremely light sensitive. Whenever this rhodopsin is striked with the light then a reaction occurs that transmits the visual messages through the optic nerve to the brain.

With every reaction some amount of vitamin A gets lost. And the body must be able to refill with the losses, so that the brain constantly messages. In absence of insufficient amount of vitamin A night blindness can take place. Vitamin A is also important for hindering the development of cataract. It also reduces the age related macular degeneration that takes place in the eyes.

Animal products, green leafy vegetables, carrots, oranges are good source of vitamin A. they have high level of beta-carotene which transforms into vitamin A. but care has to be taken that large quantities of vitamin cannot and should not be ingested directly. This can be harmful. Always consume vitamin A from the indirect source.

Antioxidant vitamins-
Free radicals are readily soaked up by antioxidants, before they can do any harm to they body. These radicals are actually molecules that develops when oxygen and food is processed by the body, If left unchecked can damage the cells. Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant vitamin. Also known as ascorbic acid it can reduces the chances of cataract, glaucoma and AMD. This vitamin C is present in the cells of the body but the concentration in the eye is more. Vitamin C is also needed for the eye movement when connected with the white portion of the eye the sclera. Some of the rich source of vitamin C is citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, potatoes and berries.

Vitamin E-
Vitamin can be amassed in the fats of the tissues. It can greatly avert cataract and AMD. Vitamin E is abundant in nuts, grains, seeds, green leafy vegetables and vegetable oil.

The two major antioxidants of carotenoid are lutein and zeaxanthin. They are also known as beta-carotene. They are abundant in yellow fruits, leafy vegetables, kale, collard greens, corn and squash.

Thus one should follow a well planned nutrition program for the health of the eyes.
