Nutritional labeling of food: understanding a food label

Nutritional labeling is provided with every kind of packaged food. It helps you chose your food in a better way. The labeling helps you understand the ingredients of the food item, nutritional value and various factors which help you in selecting the appropriate food item. With the urge in the population to eat healthy and nutritious food, nutrition labeling has become must for every food item. You would find a nutritional labeling in the front or at the side of the container containing the food item.

One needs to understand the food label to choose your food wisely since there are many factors mentioned in the labeling. Make it a habit to read the labeling and understand the label, take decision whether food item is appropriate for you.

The first factor which is mentioned in all the labels is serving size, which mentions the size or the content of the food item. The food item is intended for this many persons, or sometimes the weight might be written, or some kind of proportional figure might be indicated. One should understand this well and interpret it correctly. You can compare two food items of similar category and choose the appropriate one.

The second factor which is mostly included in all the food items would be calorie content in the food. It helps you understand how much calorie or energy you would intake on eating this food item. Besides calories, also mentioned are the proteins intakes from the food, carbohydrate content, and fat content. The daily value included in most of the food items helps you learn about the nutrients intake from the food item when taken on a daily basis and helps achieve your required nutritional levels. Please remember that these counts are indicated for each serving of food and not for the entire pack!

Nutrient content which is mentioned in all the food items is the most important of all. The amount of minerals, vitamins the food item contains is mentioned in the label. The nutritional value of the food item is mentioned along with each of the minerals and vitamins nutritional value.  This way you can chose your food wisely and plan your meals, for instance having a low fat meal during night, which can be inferred from the label and accordingly planning other meals.
