Painful Sex Due to Vaginismus

When a woman feels pain while sexual intercourse it is known as dyspareunia. It can be in the genital area or in the pelvis region. Although you can disregard one or two episodes of pain during sex but if it persists then you need to see a doctor. Sex is done for pleasure and you should be having fun instead of pain. You can even consult your family planning clinic. They are trained to deal with this type of pain.

Usually the pain often goes if the partner indulges more in foreplay. It helps the muscles of vagina relax and the natural lubricants start flowing or even a lubricating cream can also be used. But still if you don’t find any relief then doctor can make an assessment by vaginal examination and test and put you on some treatment. Sometimes the problem is more deep rooted. For example: spasm of the vaginal muscle due to the fear of hurt. Also known as vaginismus, can cause both deep and superficial pain. This problem requires medicine with psychological therapy.

Vaginismus is a spasm of vaginal muscle due to the fear of being hurt. Women suffering from this problem may not be able to enjoy sex for years. The fear of hurt does not let them go even for a vaginal checkup or smear test. But it is highly treatable and does not require complex invasive technique like surgery etc.

Common cause of this problem is a restrictive upbringing or in an atmosphere where sex was considered to be a taboo. Another reason could be a childhood sexual abuse taken place.  The fear of hurt is still in the subconscious mind of the woman which does not let her have intercourse. Another reason could be unease with the partner. With little understanding and care it can be fully treated.
