Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Symptoms

Pelvic inflammatory disease i.e. PID refers to bacterial infection of a women’s womb, fallopian tubes and other reproductive organs. PID is a serious complication of some sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea and Chlamydia. It can lead to infertility, chronic pelvic pain, Ectopic pregnancy and abscess formation. Ectopic pregnancy is a major complication of pregnancy and a major proportion of it each year are caused by PID. As a result of Pelvic inflammatory disease more than 75,000 female become infertile.

Women below 25 years of age are more prone to develop Pelvic inflammatory disease than those who are above 25 years of age. The reason behind it may be that teenage girls and young women do not have fully matured cervix. This makes them more susceptible to PID. If a woman has more than one sex partner or if her partner has sex partner more than one then she will be at a higher risk of developing PID.

The symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease can be none, mild or severe. A woman who has been attacked by PID due to chlamydial infection may experience only mild symptoms. The fallopian tube infections caused by Chlamydia can be also without any symptoms. Symptoms of PID often appear when infection and inflammation reaches the fallopian tubes and abdominal lining.

Pelvic inflammatory disease may show symptoms such as low back pain, vomiting or nausea, pain in pelvis and lower abdomen, difficulty or pain during urinating. The sufferer may also show symptoms like fatigue, diarrhea and signs of shock like fainting.

Symptoms like pain during intercourse and bleeding after sex can also be found in the sufferer. If you are suffering from Pelvic inflammatory disease then you may have irregular menstrual bleeding or heavy and unusual vaginal discharge which will have unpleasant odor. A woman with PID can have fever with temperature higher than 101 F i.e. 38.3 C.

Women with pelvic inflammatory disease and their health care providers are often unable to recognize this disease because of its vague, mild or no symptoms. If you have any of the above mentioned symptoms of PID then you must see a doctor and get prompt treatment. If you are suffering from a sexually transmitted disease then its immediate treatment will prevent you from getting PID.
