Practice Safe Sex: Use Contraception

Every couple has ambitions and aspirations of their own. Some are eager to start their own families and some want to take some time before they start planning their family. Also with the changing social-economic conditions, large families have become much less desirable. In this case, active contraception is the best way to go forward.

Where a couple of decades back, contraception was not that readily available, today there is a wide variety of both male and female contraceptives that are readily available in the market. Scientifically, we have reached an era where pregnancies can be planned very effectively giving women the opportunity to give birth at a time when they are both physically and mentally prepared for giving birth.

According to industry intelligence, oral pills are the most popular contraception method. Besides oral contraception, condoms for males and females, vasectomy, female sterilization, intra-uterine devices known as coils, contraceptive injections, skin patches and diaphragm are also popular choices.

Besides the contraception devices and medicines, one age old method that many couples like to practice is male withdrawal before ejaculation. Though this is not the most fool proof way of preventing pregnancies, many couples do not like to use contraception on a regular basis.

All the other contraceptive methods are thoroughly checked and approved by experts in family planning. Like all remedies or preventive measures, certain things work better than others. Vasectomy, sterilization, pills and condoms are the safest contraceptives. However, except for condom, none of the contraceptives provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases.

Even though most methods would give you reasonable protection, none is completely effective if used in the wrong manner. The only way to have effective contraception is to do it properly. Read the instructions carefully. If you are using pills as a contraceptive, make sure that you do not forget your daily dose. Missing a single pill could significantly increase chances of pregnancy.

Another thing to keep in mind before you choose your contraceptive is that all things don’t suit everyone. For example, if the male has latex allergy, condoms might not be the right contraceptives for you. Similarly, all pills do not suit everyone. So consult a specialist before you plan to start on a contraceptive.
