Proper Nutrition During Pregnancy

The nutritional status of the expectant mother affects the development of the baby. Hence a pregnant mother needs to take proper nutrition during pregnancy. If you are pregnant then your body must be undergoing many changes at this time which needs to be taken care of. If you want to avoid the common complications during your pregnancy and wish to have a healthy and strong baby; take extra care to take proper nutrition during pregnancy.

If you take proper nutrition during pregnancy it will significantly reduce the risk of birth defects in your babies and will also reduce chronic diseases like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol in adulthood. Healthy and proper diet taken by a pregnant woman helps her in avoiding pregnancy complications such as high blood pressure, anemia, and gestational diabetes.

It may also help in reducing some common complaints during pregnancy such as constipation, fatigue, and morning sickness. If you want to loose your extra weight put on during pregnancy, proper nutrition taken while being pregnant will help you to achieve this postpartum. Do not skip a meal, especially your breakfast. Do not have large meals; instead take 4 to 6 small meals to keep you energetic throughout the day. Take sufficient foods to fulfill the daily requirement. Calcium is one of the most vital mineral needed by you during your pregnancy. 1200 mg of calcium intake is recommended by the doctors during pregnancy. In order to fulfill this need you should increase consumption of dairy products like cheese, yogurt, skim milk, and ice milk. You can also consume non-dairy products like broccoli, salmon, kale, beans and calcium-fortified orange juice.

Other important nutrients needed to be consumed during pregnancy are protein, folic acid, Vitamin B12, iron, Vitamin A, etc. You should increase your protein intake by 10 grams; hence include legumes, cereal grains, eggs, meats, milk, etc in your diet. For proper functioning of the nerves and brain of you as well as your baby you need Vitamin B12. This can be fulfilled by consuming animal products, fortified soy milk or vitamin supplements.

In general have a lot of fruits and green vegetables and drink plenty of water. Avoid fried foods, processed foods, under cooked meat, caffeine and alcohol.
