Reversing Gum Disease
Initially it was believed that we lose our teeth in old age. But old age is not the only cause of losing our teeth. In the United States, gum disease is the biggest reason people lose their teeth. Also known as periodontal, gum disease is the infection of tissues and bones supporting your teeth. If your gum area is inflamed and you have swelling, pain, bad breadth or bleeding; these may indicate that you have gum disease.
Usually gum disease is caused when plaque build up on your teeth. Plaque is soft, colorless, invisible sticky deposit that is formed on our gums and teeth. Bacteria are present in plaque. Toxins are produced by these bacteria which causes damage to our gums. These bacteria multiply and grow in our mouth by feeding on the sugar contents of foods. Acid produced by them erodes the teeth enamel and cause tooth decay.
Gum disease is not a permanent condition and therefore you can reverse it by following a good dental hygiene care. If you want to reverse gum disease, it is of utmost importance to keep your teeth and tongue clean. You must begin with brushing your teeth properly at least 2 times daily. Different types of toothpastes and toothbrushes are now found in the market. Your toothbrush should have soft bristles. Change your toothbrush before their bristles get damaged. Brush gently for about 2 minutes and clean your tongue too. You can also use an oral irrigator for brushing your teeth. An oral irrigator can effectively clean your teeth and can help in reversing gum disease.
You should floss daily and properly. If it is possible for you then you must brush and floss after every meals. In order to reverse your gum disease it is also necessary to floss deep below your gum line. A mouthwash containing fluoride should be used in order to keep your mouth clean and kill the thriving bacteria in your mouth. Get your plaque cleaned regularly by a dentist. This will help you in controlling and killing bacteria and reverse gum disease.
Diet plays an important role in controlling gum diseases. You should not consume a diet that is rich in sugar. Do not eat sugar containing eatables in between two meals. Include fiber rich foods, vegetables and fruits in your diet. This is beneficial in reversing the gum disease.
