Ringworm and its treatment
Ringworm is a form of fungal infection that can infect the skin, hair and nails. It is caused by a certain microorganism thriving on the outer dead layer of the skin. Those living in warm, humid conditions and having direct contact with infected people or animals are likely to develop the infection themselves. It may also develop in those having a weakened immune system such as those suffering from diabetes or AIDS. Sometimes it may also be generated due to contact with soil.
Ringworm of the skin develops as small raised areas that gradually enlarge to take up a ring like shape. The sore may have scales, crust or fluid filled areas and may be accompanied by irresistible itch and pain. It is commonly found in areas of the body such as the trunk, legs, neck, face and the arms. Ringworm of the scalp causes the skin of the scalp to turn scaly and may even cause temporary hair loss. It occurs frequently in children. Besides this, ringworm may also develop between the toes and such a condition is commonly known as Athlete’s foot.
Ring worms are usually not dangerous and can be rid of easily. But if it is accompanied by adverse symptoms such as fever, swelling, redness and increased pain one should immediately seek treatment from a hospital as it may be indicative of a bacterial super infection.
One may also resort to self care at home. On several occasions ringworm may go away without treatment but normally it requires anti fungal medications and creams to be applied topically.
In treating this kind of fungal infection one must keep in mind certain do’s and don’ts. The sore must be kept clean and dry at all times. The anti fungal medication must be applied liberally twice daily for at least two weeks. avoid touching the sore area. Maintain proper hygiene and clean your hands and body frequently and stay dry. Avoid participating in sports and activities that involve physical contact with other people.
Finally, one must remember that it is a highly contagious disease and spreads on contact. It is therefore important that clothes and other personal care objects of infected members of the family must be kept away separately.
