Scabies and its treatment
Scabies is a condition of the skin, that causes severe itch, due to infestation by the sarcoptes scabiei , popularly known as the itch mite. These eight legged mites can be spotted with a microscope or a magnifying glass, but they escape the vision of the naked eye. They burrow in the skin and cause intense and severe itching, which worsens during the night.
The scabies mites are contracted via close contact among individuals. However one is not likely to get scabies by shaking hands with a person who has it, or hanging his coat beside the person’s coat, or even by using bed clothes that have been used by the infested person the night before, but sexual encounter with a person having the condition is likely to contaminate the disease. In fact, sexual contact has been identified as the most common reason for spreading of the condition. Also, close kith and kin may turn out to be a potent breeding ground for the mites.
Eminent symptoms of scabies include blisters and skin rashes comprising small bumps which are red in colour. These symptoms may be commonly located on wrists, elbows, webs of the finger, on and around the feet, waist, and genital and buttock areas of an individual. It is worth noting that the symptoms may not be eminent until a span of 1 or 2 months, although, it the disease is capable of spreading meanwhile. There is only a subtle itch in the beginning, which intensifies gradually with time, making it impossible for the victim to sleep at night.
Treatment for scabies should comprise of applying a mite-killer from neck down, overnight and washing it off the next day. Applying permathrin repeatedly after seven days, may be useful in this regard. Scabies may also be alternately treated by the application of 30grams cream or 1% lotion of lindane for eight hours which should be washed off subsequently. Evermectin, which is an oral medicine; 10% lotion or cream of crotamiton and antihistamines are also considered very helpful in treating scabies.
