Secondary Infertility
Secondary infertility is a condition in which you are able to conceive for the first time and successfully deliver a baby but you are unable to become pregnant for the second time. This is a common problem with couples having single child. A survey in 1995 stated that nearly 3.3 million American women suffered from secondary infertility.
There can be various reasons for secondary infertility. The problem can be either with you or your partner. So you should not blame each other.
If you are planning to conceive for the second child but had suffered from any serious illness, your fertility might have been affected. Hence, instead of worrying, wait for a few years and be in touch with your doctor. After recovering from your health problem completely you may be able to get pregnant again.
After your first child, if your husband gets addicted to smoking and consumption of excessive alcohol, he may face erection problems. Due to erectile dysfunction, he may not be able to make you pregnant. But if he quits smoking and minimizes alcohol intake and exercises regularly, you can successfully get pregnant again.
Age is another factor which may hinder you from getting pregnant for the second time. But with proper diet, healthy life style, regular exercise and proper medications you can improve the quality of your eggs and can get pregnant again.
Women who had suffered from amenorrhea (no periods), PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) or oligomenorrhea (infrequent menstruation), too may face secondary infertility. Due to hormonal disorder also, some women are unable to get pregnant for the second time. In some cases, some fertility drugs can cure this problem.
In some cases, as time passes, you can get pregnant second time naturally. But in most of the cases, you need medical help to get pregnant.
Doctors recommend you or your partner for different kinds of blood tests, semen test etc. Thereafter, your doctor will come to know whether you are producing eggs or not; whether your husband is producing adequate and healthy sperm or not and is there any blockage in your fallopian tube or your husband’s testicles. After knowing the problem, your doctor can help you out and you can conceive for the second time.
