Sexual intercourse during menstrual period

This is a thing frowned upon in most cultures and faiths. Men and women often suffer from the misconception that having sexual intercourse during the woman’s menstrual period is unsafe and unhealthy.Contrary to popular belief sexual intercourse during menstrual periods is completely normal and healthy. In fact surprisingly it might prove to be helpful for the woman.

The misconceptions in this regard most often are known to have stemmed from societal misconceptions. Girls from a very tender age are taught that the menstrual blood that flows out is ‘dirty’ and should be contained and hidden at all times.

However contrary to this belief menstrual blood being a completely natural bodily fluid is not known to cause harm to a man’s penis or a woman’s reproductive tract. As long as one decides to engage in safe and protected sexual intercourse it is perfectly fine for him to do so.

Although it is considered to be off-putting by many, quite a few number of couples do choose to opt for oral sex during periods. In this case too one can be rest assured that it is safe to do so. Menstrual blood can transmitted bacteria so use of a dental dam is highly recommended.

Many women find sexual intercourse during menstrual periods helpful in reducing menstrual pains and cramps. Sexual intercourse actually helps in relieving from menstrual cramps and pains because an orgasm causes the uterus to contract and enables it to use up excess prostagaldin in the process.

Prostaglandins are hormones that are known to originate from the lining of the uterus. Prostaglandins are responsible for stimulating the contractions that help in moving the menstrual blood out from the uterus. Prostaglandins are also responsible for the menstrual pains and cramps that take place during the whole of the menstrual period.

It may be noticed that sexual intercourse during menstrual periods often causes the period to cease unexpectedly a day before time. This often is followed by misconceptions that the menstrual blood has ‘backed up’ or is stuck somewhere in the reproductive tract, which is not at all the case. In fact the menstrual blood is expelled at a faster rate due to the increased number of contractions that take place in the uterus due to sexual intercourse.

So it may be concluded that there is no reason to be worried about sexual intercourse during menstrual periods.
