Social Anxiety Symptoms

Nervousness is a common factor experience by most people when they have to deliver a speech to a large audience or go for an important interview. But in normal person, this kind of nervousness diminishes soon and after facing the situation he/she feels better and confident.

But if nervousness doesn’t end and lasts even if you reach home after facing a large audience, it can be said that you are suffering from a mental disorder known as social anxiety disorder. Social anxiety disorder is commonly referred to as social phobia.

If social anxiety disorder is left untreated, it can make your life distressing. You would not get success in studies if you are a student; you would not get promotion if you are working in any organization; you would not be invited for any cultural programme due to your behavior. Eventually you will be left alone by your companions or you yourself may choose to remain isolated.

Social anxiety disorder has very bad impact on a person’s social and family life. Hence, it needs to be treated properly. The moment you observe social anxiety disorder symptoms in yourself or any of your family members or friends, you should begin his/her treatment.

There are different types of social anxiety symptoms. If any of your family members become stressful (every time) if you ask him/her to meet new people, it could be a symptom of social phobia or social anxiety disorder.

If any person becomes too nervous and frightened to face certain situations (where others find comfortable) it could be a sign of social phobia.

Patients suffering from social anxiety disorder have other symptoms such as: a) getting stressed from making or receiving phone calls to strangers, b) they avoid going on date, c) they are always conscious and think that their activities are being watched by others and evaluated, d) they avoid using public bathrooms, e) they face a lot of problems while eating and drinking in public etc.

You should not misunderstand shyness as social anxiety disorder. Most people feel shy while meeting his/ her first date or facing social gatherings, but when it exceeds its limit it is said to be a mental disorder. Upset stomach, blushing, trembling etc are some other common symptoms of social anxiety disorder. Social anxiety disorder needs to be treated in order to lead a normal life.
