Soups for Health

Our busy lives have made us forget the benefits of soups. A bowl of soup can comfort and nourish our body in winters and can refresh in summers. It can help our sour throats fight off colds and help in making our bones strong.

A good chicken soup can help cure cold and joint pains as it is full of calcium and other minerals. Moreover, there is an old rumor, that chicken soup can even improve your love life.

Good stock is a base of any good soup. Stock is prepared by slowly simmering together all the ingredients like bones, flesh, skin and some veggies. This makes it full of nutrients. By adding some bread twists noodles or pasta you can take it as a meal or as a snack.

You can increase the intake of veggies in children in the form of soups. A bowl of soup is low in fat and an easy way to incorporate lots of vitamins and minerals into your diet, especially if they are homemade. I am not against tinned soups but the sodium content is very high in them. If you don’t have the time, go for good brands of low sodium stock and mix them with fresh veggies.

One more thing you can do to make a bean soup is use canned beans. Just rinse them and they are ready to use.

Drinking a variety of soups, except for the thick soups containing cream, help to maintain weight in the long run. By just adding low sodium, low calorie soup in your diet you will see yourself loosing weight in no time because soup gives a feeling of fullness and makes us eat less. Eating too much of salt causes water retention, low sodium soups can help prevent it. Soups with lots of veggies can also help improve digestion, ease constipation and help cleanse the colon.

To boost the immune system or if you are feeling under the weather try miso soup. Miso soup is best for good health and recovery from ill health. Miso is a paste made from Soya beans and is even thought to stop cancer cells from multiplying.
