Spinal tumor – symptoms and treatment

A spinal tumor is a congregation of malignant cells in or around the spinal cord. These may arise from the spread of cancer from another part of the body namely the breasts, lungs or other glands.

The tumor that forms as a result of the spreading of cancer from some other part of the body is known as the secondary tumor and the one that is formed by its own, is known as the primary tumor. Secondary tumor spreads pretty fast, however; primary tumor takes quite some time to spread. We tell you more about this ailment.

The symptoms of spinal tumor vary depending on the area of formation, size and affecting status. With the growing size of the tumor, it affects various parts of the spine namely the bones, the Cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF), blood vessels, meninges and other nerves.

Severe back pain: The most likely symptom of spinal tumor is severe pain in the lower back. The pain worsens while lying down and also spreads along the legs and arms. It is hardly relieved by rest and is also categorized by loss of appetite and nausea. The pain is persistent and often worsens at night.

Muscle weakness
: The severe back pain results in muscle weakness and numbness of the legs. With constant pain, the legs also lose sensitivity. Paralysis is likely to set in, in the lower back coupled with nerve damage and involuntary urination. With time, the spinal cord loses shape and diseases like scoliosis sets in.

Treatment of spinal tumor:

Treatments of spinal tumor are decided on the type of tumor (primary or secondary) and the age and health circumstances of the patient concerned. By proper treatment, the tumor can be eradicated and the nerves can be prevented from being damaged. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) can detect the area affected by the malignant cells.
