Many of us tend to eat rich foods during the holiday season and why not; after all its a time to party and have fun, right? No wonder many of us gain a few extra pounds over a short period of time. The worst part of it is that eating rich foods does not only make us gain extra pounds, it can also send our blood sugar level way up above the normal point! Fortunately, we can easily avoid this kind of situation by staying away from foods that raise our blood sugar.

What to avoid during the festive season

Sugar in any form can wreck havoc in the human system. Diabetic people are especially advised not to take in too much sugar in any form whatsoever. No, the holiday season is not an excuse for diabetics to sample some sweet treats. High fructose corn syrup, soda, cakes, candies and other forms of sweets are out of the question.

According to experts, these treats are not for diabetics or for people who are prone to this type of disease. Aside from sugar based treats, people should minimize their intact of carbohydrates based foods, especially those that are made from refined flour. White bread, pasta, cookies, pancakes, spaghetti and other foods loaded with carbohydrates should be taken in moderation.

When it comes to drinks, too much alcohol is strictly a no-no. Alcoholic beverages are not only bad for the health; they can also cause a lot of trouble on the road. A lot of people who had too much to drink get involve in road accidents during the holidays so people should be extra careful when taking their fill of alcohol. While drinks with high alcohol content are off limits, drinks like beer, white and red wines are perfectly alright if taken in moderation.

Is it alright to drink soda instead of alcoholic beverages?

Most types of soda drinks are loaded with sugar and calories so it is best to avoid these types of drinks as well. Instead of drinking soda, people should stick to fresh fruit juices and water.

We know that it can be really difficult to control yourself over the festive season but hey, just think about it! You are preparing yourself for a far healthier new year!
