Stiff Neck
A spasm in the neck muscle caused due to any activity results in a stiff neck. Stress and bad posture are two common causes of a stiff neck. Bending over a desk for hours or sitting in a wrong posture while working can cause strain in muscles. Sometimes watching a match with head going back and forth can also cause a stiff neck. Moreover, sleeping in an uncomfortable position, especially sleeping in a couch, while watching TV, can also cause a stiff neck.
Giving a hot compress for twenty to thirty minutes can help a lot. It increases the blood circulation and relaxes the muscles. Do it for three to four times a day but hot compress should not be applied if the stiffness is due to some injury. It will make it worse.
You can even use some ointments which have pain relieving ingredients. However, nothing beats a massage with soft and soothing strokes. Try to maintain a good posture and strengthen your neck muscles with simple exercise. Another way to relieve a stiff neck is to wear a soft survical collar. You should also sleep on your back with a good support to the curve of your spine.
If you can make it move try to move the neck gently four or five times a day. But you need to be very careful and it would be better if you consult a doctor, especially if the symptoms persist for more than one week or if you have swollen glands, fever or feel nauseous. Exercise should be discontinued if you feel any pain or the existing pain aggravates.
Once your pain is gone don’t start your daily work with full force. Take precautions while bending, lifting or playing sports. Sometimes even simple activities can aggravate the problem. There is no need to rush into anything. Be slow and steady. Remember, pain is a warning sign and a symptom. Instead of concentrating on the pain you should try to find the reason of its trigger.
