Stomach Cancer

In Stomach cancer the normal cells of the stomach tissues become cancerous and can breed out of control. It is also known as gastric cancer. The tumor in this rises from the lining of the stomach. The ailment may become asymptomatic in later stages. By the time cancer is diagnosed the prospects of recovery may become poor. It has been found that people over age group of 60 are diagnosed with stomach cancer and is more common in males than in females.

The organ stomach resembles the alphabet J and it lies in the left abdomen. The food comes from the esophagus to the stomach. Here is where all the digestive juices and gastric acidic juices churn and process the food well to carry out later digestion process. The stomach is basically divided into 5 sections.

The three sections are known as proximal stomach and produces pepsin digestive juice. In the 4th section the mixing of the food with these digestive juices happens, while the 5th section is like a tube or valve, from where the food is passed to the small intestine. The 4th and 5th section are called as distal stomach. Cancer may develop in any of these sections. It can spread to the other neighboring parts and organs of the body.

The cancers are also classified depending on the tissue from which they grow. The most common type is the Aden carcinoma. This cancer begins in the glandular tissue of the stomach and it has been noted that approximately 95% of all stomach cancer happen here. The other kind of stomach cancer is the lymphomas; here the lymphatic system as well as the sarcomas also gets involved.

The cancer may also spread to the liver, pancreas, and colon and can penetrate the stomach wall and can attack the lymph nodes too. In rare cases the cancer may also spread to the lungs, ovaries and the collar bone. It has been found that the cancer which gets spread to the other parts has similar kind of abnormal cells.
