Strep throat: Can it kill you?
Strep throat is a common infection caused by the Streptococcal bacteria and many people simply confuse it with a sore throat. But please be aware that they are completely different conditions. Not many people are aware of the fact that if they do not treat a strep throat properly it can lead to heart problems. A strep throat can cause rheumatic heart diseases. All this can lead to severe heart ailments which can kill you in the long run.
What can happen?
If a strep throat is untreated it can lead to side effects which can have dangerous reactions. There is a strong chance of developing tonsillitis, toxic shock and rheumatic fever. Breathing can be restricted if the patients develops a tonsil abscess and if the strep throat not adequately treated. This can happen more in adults than in teenagers and children. The individuals can be in a lot of pain and might find it difficult to open their mouth and talk. These extreme conditions are not only painful and make it difficult for the patient to bear but can also cost their lives also which is the most dangerous aspect.
What can you do?
If one has very high fever or has a sore throat which makes it difficult for them to swallow it is most advisable to see a doctor and get medical advice. If the condition is not that severe and there is not high fever and one can swallow, the condition should be properly monitored. One should take adequate medication and have lots of liquids. Do try to gargle with warm water which has table salt in it .
If someone around you has a strep throat there are chances that you might develop the same. You should ensure that the patient covers the mouth and the nose while coughing and sneezing and properly disposes the used tissues and napkins. Before eating and cooking ensure that you wash your hands properly with soap and water. The utensils and the clothes should be washed with proper soap and in hot water. It is also important that if you have any cuts and sores they should be kept clean as the bacteria can also enter through the skin.
Its a completely treatable condition but you need to take of it before it progresses to something really dangerous.
