Things You didn’t Know About Breast Cancer

There are a lot of things we are yet to know about breast cancer. We think we have all the information but often we are quite ignorant of all the vital matters.

HISTORY ISN’T THAT IMPORTANT-
The thinking that women who carried abnormal copies of BRCA1 and BRCA2 had a 50 per cent to 80 per cent risk of developing breast cancer themselves is a myth .New analysis of the research has cut that down to 40 to 51%. 200mcg of selenium intake everyday helps lower BRCA associated risks.

YOUR HAIR CAN HELP-
A test is being developed by scientists who can identify breast cancer simply by running a piece of hair through an X-ray. Proteins are secreted into the bloodstreams as the tumor develops. These impact the hair and show up as a ring n the scalp.

VITAMIN D CAN PROTECT YOU-
Women with low levels of vitamins D, when diagnosed with breast cancer are more likely to die. Oily foods like fish and exposing yourself to the sun for 20 minutes each day can solve the problem.

CITY GIRLS ARE MORE AT RISK-
Traffic emissions and pollutants make the breast tissues more glandular, and glandular cells in the breast are where the cancer forms.

ALCHOHOL IS A CULPRIT-
Both daily and binge drinking increases the risk of breast cancer, but life is too short to never have a glass of wine. Dr. Laura Baglietto from the Cancer Council Victoria, Australia, has discovered that 400mcg of folate a day-found in dark, green, leafy vegetables, like spinach, kale, broccoli, cuts alcohol induced risks by more than half.

SOME FOODS COULD HELP-
New studies have found that cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower rev up underperforming genes that detoxify carcinogens- cutting risks in women who carry those genes by 50%.

RACE MIGHT MATTER-
a recent study has found that black British women are diagnosed with breast cancer 21 years younger than white women. “My advice is- if you find something at an early age, don’t assume it is nothing. We don’t know enough about the genetics,” says Dr. Rebecca Bowen, a researcher at UK’s Cancer Research Campaign.

POKING YOUR BREASTS WON’T HELP-
Recent news from the US claims “self-exams are pointless”. Instead, become aware of how your breasts look and feel day-to-day, and seek help if anything changes. After all, if a lump is found early, 97 % of women with breast cancer survive for five years or more.
