Tips on Breast Care While Lactation

The joy of being a mother is wonderful, so is the joy of being able to breast feed your tiny little miracle. Breast feeding is considered the best for the first few months later the baby’s birth and is beneficial both to you and your baby. Baby care and hygiene go hand in hand and it becomes extremely important to take good care of your breasts during lactation. Adequate care ensures that the shape and firmness of your breasts are preserved.

Firstly, make sure that the breasts and nipples are clean and dry otherwise they would become sore and infected. It is important to regularly wash the nipples, keep them clean but do not soak it in water as that would lead to infection and cracking of the nipples. Always be careful not to use soap to clean the nipples and areola as this may lead to infection.

You may apply some oil except mustard oil or cream on the nipples to make them soft and supple. But always ensure you wash off the cream or oil before feeding. After every feed wash the nipples with clean water so that any milk sticking to it gets removed. Keep a pad or clean cloth in the bra cup for any excess milk oozing out and be sure to change the cloth frequently. You need to be aware that there are other secretions from the breasts that need not be cleaned as they are meant to protect the breast from infection.

It is good to expose the breast nipples to air for few minutes daily as this will keep it clean and dry. In case you are the mother of multiple babies, mothers generally wonder if they will be able to breast feed all the babies. You can successfully feed them as the body is so beautifully designed that it will supply adequate milk as per the requirement of your babies.

If you have twins, you may consider a suitable position to save them both simultaneously though it is not that simple. Keep your breasts firm by wearing a good fitting bra as this helps in avoiding sagging breasts.
