Toddler Sleep Problems

There can be different types of toddler sleep problems. In some cases, you can cure with home remedies while in other cases you would need to consult your doctor.

Teeth grinding is a common problem found in toddlers while they are asleep. They can grind teeth due to earache, tension or any sort of anxiety. Orpinworms allergies are also responsible for teeth grinding in many cases. Though teeth grinding is not a serious problem you should consult your doctor if the problem persists for a long time. Take your toddler to a dentist. You can also soothe your child with a soak in tub at bedtime. Some homeopathic treatments are considered very beneficial for toddler’s teeth grinding.

Excessive sweating is another sleep problem in toddlers. Little bit of sweating is normal but if your child sweats extremely, it could be due to sleep apnea. If your child sweats at night time you should not worry. But if he/she continues to sweat regularly or he/she sweats along with pauses in her breathing, you need to take your baby to your doctor.

If your child breathes rapidly for a while and before resuming normal breathing pattern he/she pauses for some seconds (say 15 seconds) then it could be due to sleep apnea. If breathing pauses takes place in your child along with loud snoring, you must take him/her to your doctor.

In some cases, children walk in their sleep but they appear to be awake. This could be dangerous. In sleepwalk you may see your child doing regular work such as playing, getting dressed up etc. Your child may appear to be walking and doing his activities with open eyes, but the truth may be that he might be sleeping. You have to be alert in such case.

Sleep walk may last for a few minutes or approximately for 30 minutes. Though children of any age can be affected by sleepwalk, it is more common in children of age group 4-8 years. If you find your child not talking sensible things or he is looking excessively tired or confused, you can be sure that he is walking in his sleep. You need to awake him or allow him to sleep again. If your child suffers from sleep walk, you should always try to live on ground floors. Always be alert so that your child does not hurt himself while sleep walking.
