Use and Abuse of Tranquillizers
Tranquillizers are used to treat sleep disorders, mental disorders and to relieve stress. There are mild tranquillizers called Librium and valiom in many medicines which work as a sedative and can cause drowsiness. These tranquillizers operate in the same way as alcohol on nervous system.
Due to the relaxing quality of tranquillizers they are also known as downers. They come in different shape and sizes in the form of tablets, capsules and syrups. If taken for medical reasons, these medicines can be very helpful. For example they are useful in treating alcohol withdrawal. However, often people abuse it by taking it with alcohol or taking it after taking a stimulant. These combination’s can be fatal. Sometimes people even take out the powder from the capsule and inject it by diluting it in water.
After taking it the user feels relaxed and because the tolerance develops rapidly more and more are needed to be effective. The tranquillizers are not very strong but if taken with alcohol or mix with other drugs can cause slurred speech, drowsiness, and unconsciousness and in some cases coma also.
If the patient is conscious try to induce vomiting by putting your finger down the user’s throat. But if the user is unconscious, then don’t try to make him vomit but put him in a recovery position and call for medical help immediately. You need to realize one thing that staying calm is the most important rule of any crisis. A problem can turn into tragedy if you don’t take right decision at the right time and staying calm is the only way of doing it.
Tranquillizers can impair our ability to function and misuse can result in unpleasant and dangerous side effects. . One misconception which generally people have is because these drugs have medical usage these are safe to take. But over use can often lead to psychological and physical dependence.
