What are the Treatments for Breast Cancer?

Treatment begins with crucial decision of surgery. The tumor has to be removed and after care with improvements of the breast is also done. In the recent treatments lumpectomy along with radiation therapy is done. This process is very successful, thus one can save from going for mastectomy where the complete breast is removed.

Lumpectomy removes the cancer. It is in fact a surgery to conserve the breast. While in some cases partial mastectomy is done by incision. This may depend on the location of the tumor and accordingly the surgery is done.

After the surgery the doctor recommends for radiation therapy. This process is also known as radio therapy. This is done to wipe out and cancer cells that has been left. This is done so as to prevent the cancer cells from reoccurring. Without this therapy the chances of cancer to rectum increases by 25%.

Even the latest research shows that females who have undergone lumpectomy along with radiotherapy survive equally well like the females who have got mastectomy done. But in case if the cancer reappears then mastectomy is suggested.

Chemotherapy will depend on the extent of cancer spread. In some cases the chemotherapy is done before the surgery, so as to shrink the tumor. This facilitates the easy removal of cancer lump. The process also involves the usage of various cancer drugs. Such drugs are extremely powerful, but they also do have certain side effects. The drugs are oral for consumption and are also injected in from of injections.

Chemotherapy is done in cycles. The treatment period is set after which the recovery period follows and so on. Depending on the intensity of cancer spread the chemotherapy cycle lasts.

In most of the cases after mastectomy breast implants are done. Such implants are done for breast reconstruction. It has its advantages and disadvantages too. The implant can be done quickly, but it can also lead to infection and break down. In most of the cases the women’s own tissue are suggested for reconstruction for more natural looking breasts.
