What is Derma Abrasion?
Derma abrasion is a process that is meant to smoothen out the wrinkle lines and scars. In this surgical scrapping of the skin is done in controlled manner. This gives the top most layer of the skin a smooth appearance. Derma abrasion can be done all over the face or it may be done in combination with other treatment.
But this kind of treatment may not suit all the skin types. Particularly for dark skinned people, permanent discoloration in skin or blotchiness could happen. People who have freckled skin should avoid this kind of treatment in small areas, as their freckles may vanish only in the treated areas. Extremely sensitive skinned people should also consider the pros and cons before undergoing the treatment. People who have blisters or cold sores over their skin may develop flare ups.
Before going for one it’s better to discuss your expectations and the results with the dermatologists. Evaluation of the skin and documentation of the patients is necessary before the treatment. It may be needed to think about other alternative treatment procedures. Derma abrasion is basically done to treat the acne pits, chicken pox scars, melasma, rhinophyma, premalignant actinic damage, peroral rhytids and tattoos. Derma abrasion does not harm the melanocytes of the skin and the chances of pigmentation changes are very low. The procedure is cost effective than, chemical peel and laser resurfacing.
The skin usually becomes swollen, red and tender after the procedure. Dressing is done to reduce the irritation and tingling sensation, this also speeds up the healing. Care should be taken so that the wound heals completely. The new skin generally takes 7-10 days to grow. Itching may be common reaction with the growth of new skin.
Generally an ointment is prescribed which has to be applied over the treated area. The ointment could be applied depending on the dryness of the face. Care should be taken that you do not pick the face during this time.
