What Is Exploding Head Syndrome?

This condition is strange condition that happens occasionally. The sufferer experiences an exploding noise inside his/her own head. The explosion could be in the form of banging, roar or in the form of ringing noise too. This happens usually at the time of dusk, when the person is falling to sleep. It may not be due to dreams. But this may happen sometimes in the day too.

The sound or the bang is enormously loud and in most of the cases sudden pain in the head is experienced. The condition may not be so serious, but under extremities it may make the life distressful. The heart rate may get increased and the person may have a feeling of anxiety. The condition is often confused with other kind of headache syndromes. Usually the exploding head syndrome is painless unlike the other painful head syndrome.

The statistics about the people suffering from this kind of condition is still unknown. Men are more prone to suffer from it. And it can start at any stage.

What are the causes?
The cause is still unknown and in most of the cases it is often confused with other kinds of headache. Parents of the kids suffering from it get confused with migraine or any other major syndrome or trauma. Physicians correlate it with stress, fatigue or anxiety too. It can happen due to the sudden movement of the middle ear component or the Eustachian tube. It can be due to a seizure that is minor in nature in the temporal lobes; here is where the nerve cells of hearing are located.

The condition can trigger any time. And the number of attacks may also vary. Some times it may happen in clusters too.

Treatment of this syndrome
Some evidences suggest that clomipramine can help in treating this condition. But with regular occurrence it is better to seek the medical help. The doctor can only tell that whether it is associated with any other disorders or not.
