What Is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a most common gum condition. Even studies reveal that almost all of us suffer from this condition at least one time in our life. Even statistics reveal at approximately 80% of the population across the globe is having this condition in some form or the other. For some others it might be a major problem.

But the question is how this problem triggers. The bacterium that is present in our mouth is responsible for the gum problem. The bacteria live on plaque. This plaque gets deposited on teeth and is soft in its preliminary stage. Later in due course of time this plaque gets hardened and calcifies on the teeth’s surface. The plaque that gets formed along with the food particles that remains stuck in the teeth with bacteria reacts in the gum line. This ultimately leads to irritation and causes gingivitis. It is basically an inflammation and can cause other problems too.

When we eat or while brushing the teeth we might feel the gums getting hurt. The gums become extremely sensitive and one may feel irritation in gums most of the times. In the later stages the gums bleed. The bleeding of gums may vary from one person to the other. Pain is also experienced while brushing.

Under extreme conditions, the pain in the gums is felt when the teeth are not brushed. The appearance of the gum also alters. The gums get inflamed and swollen, particularly in the places where gingivitis is there. The wound on the surface appears prominently and the tissue gets torn. When we touch the gums, they appear relatively soft; the usual hard and firm structure disappears. The last and the severe condition happens when the gums recede. This finally loosens the teeth and leads to tooth loss.

Gingivitis can be treated. The inflammation arising from the formation of plaque can be treated. See that the plaque doesn’t get formed on the teeth surface. Follow good dental hygiene. Brushing the teeth twice daily and flossing the teeth is important. If you have initial stages of gingivitis then seek proper dental care. Use good mouth wash to keep away bad breath. One may seek the help of the dentist for any further queries and treatment.
