What is Granuloma Annulare?

Granuloma annulare is basically a chronic skin condition which is basically associated with rashes in the skin along with red bumps which are in the form of circles or rings. The condition is degenerative kind of disorder. One of the common kind that is found is the localized Granuloma annulare. In this the bumps are small yellow or red which are also known as nodules or papules. The smaller sized lesions are around one cm while the bigger ones may range till 5 cms. The feet’s, the hands and the fingers are the most vulnerable places. There are other forms, the linear, the perforating, the disseminated and the subcutaneous. The lesions with treatment disappear but they may reoccur too. The reason for Granuloma annulare is still unknown.

It has been noticed there are in beginning no major symptoms are noticed a mild itch can trigger the condition. The patches may reappear in the bony places of the body like the knees, an elbow etc. the patch in ring form has bumps shows growth; it grows flat and purplish with growth. In certain patients more extensive rash is noticed.  The best thing is that the condition doesn’t effects the general health of the person and neither it is contagious.

One can easily recognize Granuloma annulare due to its appearance. In certain condition when the diagnosis could not be done then biopsy is done on the skin. In this local anesthesia is given to the particular place and the skin is removed and sent for biopsy, this helps is determining the reason behind the rash. Necrobiotic degeneration is the characteristic cause of inflammatory reaction. In some cases a urine test is suggested.

With proper treatment from dermatologists the condition may improve. Topical solution, to steroid creams and ointments to oral medication may be prescribed depending on the severity of condition.
