What is Lichen Planus?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory skin condition. The ailment is autoimmune the areas that are effected are eyes, genitalia, mucus lining of mouth, skin etc. in this condition blisters develop over the mucosal area and over the skin. The condition is of unusual kind. It is basically believed to be a typical immune reaction that happens due to any drug or viral infection.

In this condition the inflammatory cells mistaken with the skin cells as foreign alien particles and attack. Lichen planus may lead to numerous lesions over the skin. The mucus membrane and wide skin parts are affected due to it. It has been observed that with proper treatment most of the condition evades in 1 ½ -2 yr while the one that effects the mouth and genitals may take longer period of time.

In this condition the skin appears in the form of raised tops but has flat top. These bumps are pink purple in color. In due course of time they tend to develop white spots with purple patina. Some of them may have white lines which are termed as Wick ham’s striae. Most of the patches develop in inner legs, wrists, torso, vagina or penis. Some of them also develop in the gastrointestinal tract, larynx, bladder and eye. There bumps are characterize be extreme itchy nature. With the healing one can see the skin getting discolored. Nails and the scalp are the least effected area. But in case if these places are effected by Lichen planus then may cause permanent damage in form of baldness or smashed nails.

The condition when triggers inside the mouth can be in form of painful ulcers, sores and white patches, this effects the normal eating practices in a persons body. There are chances that these planus may develop into cancer in the alter stages especially of the mouth.

In most of the cases lichen planus heals on it own and generally antihistamines are prescribed for relief. Corticosteroids are also injected in the severely effected places, this helps in bringing inflammation and itching into control, to a great extent. Mouthwashes that are medicated can give relief and could be used on regular basis.
