Why do women and men want to do breast reduction surgeries?
Breast Reduction surgery: Advantages and Disadvantages
Breast Reduction also called as Reduction Mammoplasty is a common surgical procedure that is carried out to reduce the size of large breasts. Most women seek breast reduction surgery because of over sized breasts, a condition medically termed as hypertrophy of breast tissues.
Although the condition is not very common, the surgery is carried out very commonly nowadays to reduce the size of breasts that were enlarged by artificial means or by breast augmentation surgery!
Another common reason why breast reduction surgery is carried out is due to breast hypertrophy. Breast hypertrophy commonly occurs in both breasts in men and appears soon after puberty. Sometimes over enlargement persist after pregnancy in women too and in rare cases, it emerges independently or suddenly.
Breast reduction is performed typically on women but it may also be performed on men affected by Gynecomastia or breast hypertrophy in men. A large number of men suffer from Gynecomastia and may feel irritated and upset by their condition. Surgery restores their normal body look and their confidence in their physical appearance.
Breast Reduction is helpful for women with large pendulous breasts in a condition called as Gigantomastia. Such women may have been experiencing chronic pain in the head, neck, back and shoulders due to the weight of carrying so heavy breast tissue.
They may also suffer from circulation and breathing problems. The weight of the breast may also cause a problem due to the abrasion caused by the brassieres when they are forced to bear the weight of the breasts.
Even if there is no physical problem, big breasts may cause psychological problems with women growing conscious of their big breast in contrast to their small body. This will affect their confidence and social behavior and interactions too. This reduction surgery will thus restore confidence and increase the well being of the patient. Brest reduction patients also experience an increase in their well being and confidence. Earlier they might have been embarrassed to go out, now they are happy to receive complements on the way they look and the way they fit into clothes.
Another advantage is that reducing the amount of breast tissue can proportionately decrease the amount of breast tissue left in the body as well as an inclination to breast cancer. The surgery also makes mammography easier to conduct with less breast size.
However there are certain disadvantages. These are difficulty in breast feeding, breast tissue that gets scarred easily, a decrease in healing of wounds and decrease in lactation, difference in sensations in the nipple, enlargement of the breast due to fluid retention and changes in the shape and size of the breast tissue.
But on the whole Breast reduction surgeries are a safe and satisfying surgical procedure.
