Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are nothing but a kind of molar teeth. Molar teeth function is for chewing and grinding the food properly, they are located at the back of the mouth. Most of the adults have 3 sets of molars on each upper and lower side. The third one is better known as wisdom tooth. It comes after the 2nd molar and the growth takes place in teens or in 20’s. In all there are 4 wisdom teeth in the mouth on all the four sides of the mouth.
However dentists make use of particular terms to describe the position of teeth in the mouth. Mesial impact of wisdom tooth in natural. The word Mesial is meant with the particular kind of tooth that is angled particularly in the front part of the mouth. The tooth are also described as vertically, mesially, horizontally or distally placed. Further they can be impacted and classified either into bony impactions or soft tissues.
In bony impactions the wisdom tooth is completely enclosed inside the jaw bone. But in the soft tissue impaction only the upper portion of wisdom tooth is penetrated but is not entirely erupted from the gums.
Wisdom teeth are among the last set of teeth to be erupted in any adults. And this happens in age group of 16-28. Still a great deal of controversy remains on the existence and importance of these teeth. And weather they have to be removed or not. But it has been suggested that the teeth that remains buried entirely in normal location will not harm the teeth. But if the positioning of the teeth is not normal they the harm has to be assessed and rectified.
The dental arch gets affected due to wisdom teeth. The jaw space becomes smaller with wisdom teeth. The decayed tooth fails to fall generally under normal circumstances. With aging and gradual changes in the mouth these tooth can become a matter of concern and problem.
