Myths and Facts on Breast Cancer

Women, in general, have a number of concerns as to their breasts. At the top of their concerns is in the breasts' susceptibility to breast cancer. Amid the many contributing factors that have proven through medical and scientific research in a woman's unfortunate potential to develop breast cancer, there are a significant amount of misconceptions, which have rumored as causes of cancer to this part of the female anatomy. In women's efforts for precautionary measures in being aware of risks that can lead to the development of breast cancer, it is of valued importance to be knowledgeable as to which contributors are clinically founded, and, of those being merely breast myths.

Greatest of a woman's fears upon the development of breast cancer is that it will be fatal. Despite that, in women, breast cancer is the clinically proclaimed second leading cause of death by any form of cancer, to express that all women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have received a proverbial death sentence is among breast myths. In support of medical science, research and progressive treatments, a sizeable number of women, who developed breast cancer, are now cancer survivors.

Today, the majority of women are faced with the challenges of balancing personal lives, relationships, work, family, careers, and children, amid a progressive world. Hence, as such demands are placed upon all individuals, albeit a man or a woman, stress is abundant in society. As a result, whereas women are concerned, it has become somewhat of a conceived notion that stress can attribute to breast cancer. Such conception, based upon thorough clinical research, is that of only breast myths.

Maintaining a presentable physically appealing figure is a priority for a considerable number of women. In the pursuit of weight control, diet plays an essential role. Of the many breast myths, in that a diet, which is high in fat content, can be a source related to a woman's vulnerability for acquiring breast cancer, has been ruled out by researchers.

Regular and routine mammograms are women's best medical option, as to either receiving results, in showing that the breasts of a woman are healthy, or, to detect early development of breast cancer for optimal treatment plans. However, certain women have the misunderstanding, amid other breast myths, that receiving a mammogram will alleviate or prevent breast cancer. To summarize, mammograms are designed to only detect cancerous cells and tumors within the breasts.

Rumors can fuel all sorts of misdirected information. Certain sources have expressed on the Internet that antiperspirants were a significant and leading contributor in women developing breast cancer. This alleged claim was based on some misguided concept that the odor protecting film of antiperspirants prevents the underarms of women, in acting as a mask or shield, from purging unhealthy toxins. Its misconception was supported by the fact that the majority of all cancerous tumors within the breasts originate within the upper outside quadrant of the area of the breasts; as such locale also contains the lymph nodes. Further misconception was conceived in that the armpit is the only place on the body where perspiration, in the form of the excretion of toxins is generally presented; with the unfounded belief such toxins were imparted into the breasts and lymph nodes. This contrived rumor is yet another falsehood among breast myths.

While a positive attitude can be extremely beneficial to supportive motivation, it is among breast myths, as a cure in a woman who has been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. To place belief in that a favorable attitude can alleviate the disease could lead to the subliminal effects of depression, as well as eventual isolation.

Statistics of breast cancer can, in some instances, confuse the general mass of women. Recently, a statistic was released amongst media sources in that one of every eight women had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Such statistic was based on the concept of all women living to the age of eighty-five. Further definition conveys that if all women lived a life span of eighty-five years, one in eight, at some point during their respective lifetime, would develop breast cancer. However, in not allowing such information to be conceived negatively, or, among those exaggerated breast myths, seven of eight women will never experience such cancerous effects to their secondary feminine anatomical components – breasts.

One of the greatest misconceptions among breast myths is the belief that if a woman survived breast cancer, and, as a result, has been free of any diagnosed cancerous cells or tumors for a period of five years, she has been completely cured of cancer. Risks of cancer reoccurring for a woman that has, as the expression commonly goes, beat breast cancer, is most likely to develop within the initial two years following such diagnosis. In summary, breast cancer, in general, can reoccur at any point in a woman's life, following a prior diagnosis.
