Blood In Urine During Pregnancy
A pregnant woman may observe traces of blood in her urine. This condition is known as hematuria. Hematuria may not be a disease in itself but it may be indicative of a number of serious health problems.
When there is an unusual increase in the red blood cells in the body of a pregnant woman it gives rise to hematuria. It is linked to health problems such as urinary tract infections, bladder stone, or kidney infections. Microscopic hematuria and gross hematuria are the two types of hematuria found in pregnant women. In case of microscopic hematuria presence of blood in urine can not be traced with naked eyes. But in case of gross hematuria one can easily detect the presence of blood in urine with the help of naked eyes.
Presence of blood in urine during pregnancy is itself a symptom of hematuria. If a pregnant woman is infected with hematuria her urine may appear as red, pinkish, or smoky brown. It may be accompanied with loss of appetite, pain in the lower belly and back, and loss of weight.
Symptoms may also include burning sensation while urinating, nausea and fever. In extreme cases of hematuria, blood clots are also seen in urine. But none of these symptoms may be exhibited by a pregnant woman affected with microscopic hematuria.
Blood in urine during pregnancy may be caused due to many reasons. These reasons may include viral infections, bladder cancer, etc. Some of the causes of blood in urine during pregnancy are discussed below.
Urinary Tract Infection
One of the most common causes of blood in urine of pregnant women is the urinary tract infection or the chronic infection of bladder. When uterus of a pregnant woman grows, its weight increases and blocks the passage of urine from the bladder. This leads to hematuria.
